
My journey into plant-based living began when I was eleven years old. I saw a leaflet about the horrors of animal agriculture, especially factory farming, which was produced by famous vegetarian Paul McCartney.
That first step into vegetarianism felt natural, driven by a deep connection with animals and a growing awareness of my food choices.
Now, after several decades of vegetarianism and more than a decade of being a vegan, I can’t imagine living any other way. Neither can my children, who have been vegetarian since birth and vegan for over five years.
It’s an absolute myth that vegans can’t be healthy (a myth promoted by meat and dairy industries sadly). My children are incredibly healthy and seem to have much stronger immune systems than their friends. In fact, a recent Oxford University study found that vegan diets are amongst the healthiest on the planet and in fact the lead researcher in this study became a vegan as a result of his research!
My children radiate health, their health and energy a testament to the power of plant-based nutrition. But what brings me the most joy is knowing that our family’s choices align perfectly with our values. No living being ever has to suffer for our meals.

Making the Switch: Easier Than You Think
If you’re considering transitioning your family to a plant-based diet, you might be wondering if it’s complicated or if your children will resist. Let me assure you – it’s simpler than you might think. The key is to approach it with curiosity and creativity.
Start with familiar favorites: creamy pasta dishes made with cashew sauce, hearty bean-based chili, or crispy vegetable stir-fries with tofu. These dishes aren’t just alternatives to traditional meals; they’re delicious foods in their own right.
And here’s some good news: most supermarkets now stock a wide range of meat and dairy alternatives, and this range is growing all the time!
While whole foods like homemade bean burgers are the healthiest choice, having these alternatives on hand can make the transition much easier. Even processed vegan options like plant-based burgers are still a healthier choice than meat – and they’re perfect for busy weeknight dinners or barbecues with friends.

Environmental Impact
The numbers speak for themselves: plant-based diets use less water, produce fewer greenhouse gases, and require less land than diets heavy in animal products. A vegan diet has only 30% of the environmental impact of a high-meat diet, according to Oxford University.
By choosing more plant-based meals, we’re naturally reducing our environmental footprint. It’s as simple as that.

- Involve your children in meal planning and preparation
- Experiment with new ingredients gradually
- Keep familiar flavors and textures while swapping in plant-based ingredients
- Celebrate small victories and stay flexible

Breakfast: Creamy oatmeal topped with fresh berries, maple syrup, and a sprinkle of hemp seeds
Lunch: Rainbow wraps filled with hummus, crisp vegetables, and avocado

Snacks: Fresh fruit, nuts, or homemade energy balls
Family-Friendly Plant-Based Meal Ideas
